What is a naturopath?

“Soooo, what actually is a nature-ra-path or is it naturopathist?”

 

This is the most common question I get asked at dinner parties (closely followed by how do you pronounce it?).

Like bio-medicine, human science is the foundation of naturopathy. What set’s us apart is our philosophy of restoring health. Here are the five principles that set us apart…

TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON, NOT THE SYMPTOMS

As a holistic practitioner, I want to understand you

What is your health story?

The elemental makeup of your constitution…are your firey and tend towards dryness? Do you feel the cold easily and feel sluggish?

What does health mean and look like to you?

Do you have spiritual beliefs?

What kind of environment are you in? Is there a lot of stress? Are you supported?

You’re an interwoven tapestry of story, history, ancestry, love, heartbreak, loss and hope. I want to know you so that I know how to help you find the healing tools specific to you.

USE THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE

This not only applies to using natural remedies from my apothecary and encouraging you to nourish your body with whole foods, it’s also about honouring the healing instinct of the human body.

As a naturopath, I see that health is your body’s natural state. It will do whatever it can to return to this natural state.

 

“My role is as a practitioner is to eliminate what is standing in the way and replace what is missing. Then, I allow your body to do the rest.

 

This approach often results in not needing to take medications any more. It can save a tremendous amount of time and money in expensive higher level interventions. It also gives you a tremendous sense of trust in your body and faith in your own innate healing power.

IDENTIFY AND TREAT THE ROOT CAUSES

I don’t treat diseases or symptoms. I look beyond them to understand their root causes.

I work with tools to help restore organ systems to full function. These include:

  • nutrition
  • herbal remedies and compounds
  • movement
  • lifestyle design

When a system is restored and functioning optimally, there are no symptoms.

PREVENTION IS THE BEST MEDICINE

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Besides addressing your primary health concern, we’ll look at your family’s health history and understand what disease states you’re most vulnerable to over your lifetime.

This way, you can put in place very simple diet and lifestyle habits that will set you up with a lifestyle that will prevent chronic conditions occurring.

You’ll have peace of mind knowing that you’re doing everything possible to invest in your future health.

As a practitioner, I am not an authority on your health.

My role is to help you understand your body and give you the tools you need to tend to your health.
